I had not read the novel prior to watching the movie; I had only seen the first modern dune film which was largely forgotten, so it was a fresh experience.
It was not a terrible film, all things considered. The script/acting was by far the standout part of the film - comparable to the modern Dune film or perhaps even better. Unfortauntely, the film does have issues. It’s too short for what it’s attempting to accomplish, an adaptation of a series of six books, and apparently the studio removed about an hour of footage from the film (???). The worst part of the film was by far the effects, which were comically bad and did ruin some of the immersion.
The aesthetic that they went for (aristocratic space) was appealing.
On the script in particular - it was a bit all over the place, with some subplots not being resolved or Paul’s character development being glossed over. Nevertheless, a lot of the individual scenes were extremely compelling, such as the hand scene, the scenes with house Harkonnen, and the spice/supernatural scenes.
Apparently there is an extended cut that includes all of the footage — I have not seen it, but it is probably better than the original.
