Favourite Genres
In anime:
Drama: anime drama tend to be good, perhaps better than western ones.
Mecha: most mecha shows are good, for whatever reason, western fans think the appeal of mecha is to watch robots fight, when it usually has kino drama attached.
Suspense: anime suspense is really stacked for whatever reason. Death Note, Steins;Gate, Shinsekai Yori, Attack on Titan…
Sci-fi: at this point, scifi is not really a genre because the tropes have become so widespread, so it does not take that much effort to create a decent futuristic setting. Modern sci-fi shows have to be attached to some other genre to be compelling nowadays.
Adventure: it's the alpha genre. Not in the social sense, but the business sense: most stories people come up with on the fly are not adventure stories, but most of the top selling stories tend to be adventure stories.
Action: fights? Cool, I guess. Hope there is more to the story then that.
Fantasy: cool, but magic is a mid mechanic in fiction, and only works really well when it's given practical constraints or a definitive system, like in HxH or FMA.
Shounen: overdone, but became popular for a reason -- it's exciting.
Comedy: anime comedy generally sucks. The few that are funny (e.g. Welcome to the NHK, Ouran High School Host Club, Tatami Galaxy, Steins;Gate, Bakemonogatari) usually have a more westernized humour to them, are combined with another genre, or are outliers in terms of quality.
Romance: like the genre, but romance stories have a tendency to be too similar to each other.
Space Opera: I’m not that into them, personally. I tried watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Macross, Battleship Yamato, and Gundam; got into them to varying degrees; but never succeeded in emotionally getting into any of them.
Historical: tendency to be boring.
Slice of life: tendency to be boring.
Horror: doesn't work in anime.
In Western media:
Drama.
Sci-fi.
Suspense: anime suspense is better.
Horror: I enjoy the fear/excitement.
Space Opera: Western space shows are generally better than their anime equivalents. I’m not sure why this is.
Adventure.
Comedy: better than in anime, but usually not good regardless.
Fantasy: anime fantasy is better.
Action: anime action is better.
Romance.
Historical: tendency to be boring.
