TL;DR: it’s mid. The campaign sucks.
Disclaimer: a lot of people assume that you are bad at Titanfall 2 if you think it’s overrated. I was good at Titanfall 2 - my win percentage is 68% and I was the MVP in 37% of my lobbies (note — this game usually has more than 5 people on both teams), but I am critical of it nontheless.
The Titanfall 2 series features a campaign and a multiplayer. I played the campaign about ~4 years ago and forgot everything about it. I replayed it a time ago and I remembered why I dislike it. The combat is nice, but the story is just generic military boilerplate. No depth, no originality, nothing for higher types to enjoy. See the first part of the plot summary on Wikipedia:
Jack Cooper is a rifleman in the Militia. He aspires to become a Titan Pilot and is receiving off-the-books training from Captain Tai Lastimosa to prepare for his candidacy. The two are part of a Militia force which attacks the IMC-held planet of Typhon. In the initial battle, the Apex Predators, a group of mercenaries led by Kuben Blisk and contracted by the leader of the IMC's science division, General Marder, mortally wounds Lastimosa and incapacitates his Vanguard-class Titan, BT-7274. With his dying breath, Lastimosa transfers control of BT to Cooper. BT explains that Cooper has also inherited Lastimosa's mission, Special Operation 217: to rendezvous with Major Eli Anderson and assist in the completion of their original assignment.
The Titanfall 2 multiplayer is decent, but disappointing, because it could have been much better if it was done correctly. The base mechanics are great, but there are several design flaws that undermine the game, which I summarize as follows:
Everything is too fast: because of the massive amounts of mobility in the game, getting flanked/shot from behind happens frequently and isn’t particularly enjoyable. The spawns even have to shift occasionally because of this. I think this could be partially fixed by increasing the time to kill, but as it stands the low time to kill and high mobility do not combine well.
Titans are too powerful: it’s basically impossible to contest them as a pilot. Which is boring. Shifts in power/advantages over the course of the game can be interesting in their own way, but this type of power differential does not appeal to competitive players.
Just two issues, of course, but it turns out that these two mechanics underly everything about the game, so they cannot be ignored.
Hitscan weapons are far too OP in multiplayer as well
The titanfall 2 multiplayer is probably one of the most fun base sanboxes Ive ever played in an fps game besides the finals, any competent dev team would have actually balanced the game however and added more competitive modes. The titanfall 1 campaign actually had the retarded idea of actually staging its campaign through multiplayer games, where theyd have a cutscene explaining whats going on in the story and why both factions are fighting and map rotation followed the campaign timeline, it gave us some of the most interesting ideas in fps history though, like interactive maps I thought were the coolest thing ever
